[London, 29 September 2022] Speech recognition has provided efficiency benefits to the health profession for decades, but can the integration of this vital tool into clinical systems and into radiology work processes further boost performance? Shiraz Austin, co-founder of Augnito, a voice-AI technology company, takes a deep dive into the integration benefits of clinical speech-enabled solutions.

Speech recognition as a mature technology has evolved over the years. Today it has the potential to redefine radiology, bringing new levels of accuracy, quality, speed and security. However, maximising these performance gains requires a measured approach to integrating voice-AI driven solutions and radiologists’ working processes.

Shiraz Austin, Co-Founder of Augnito notes, “The most impactful solution is one that’s deeply integrated, bringing the best possible speech recognition (SR) engine to existing PACS/RIS workflows. In the last two years, work processes have been required to be more flexible than ever, and to be delivered remotely, or, from wherever consultants find themselves. Add to this the unprecedented pressure that the pandemic created across the NHS – with resources strained beyond their limit – and it’s no surprise that health-tech solutions, including SR are needed, and they need to deliver more than user-efficiency gains. To have the greatest impact, they need to perform seamlessly, securely and accurately at a range of different locations.”

Selecting the right speech recognition solution to deliver a seamless experience on any device to allow radiologists to work without limitations, comes down to integration, which will also need to be efficient in itself.

Shiraz continues, “Considerations into hardware, connectivity, data security, user requirements system operating platforms, IT resource availability, costs and ultimately ROI across a site, help to draw up a solution needs check-list. In many cases a legacy product will be in place which no longer supports the growing needs of a Trust, thus a ‘usability vs. new deployment’ review is essential to analyse performance and savings that could be gained with switching solutions. With a clear improvements scope, integration of the right solution into an existing clinical system with minimum or no disruption and flexible reporting processes can boost the desired user benefits, reduce backlogs, support better workflows and save money.”

The latest in voice-AI driven speech recognition, Augnito, offers a cloud-hosted product that’s already supported on multiple devices, and integration to clinical systems via its API and SDK. As a result, radiologists can benefit from integrated speech recognition and clinical word processing within their reporting tools, securely and accurately, wherever they need to without disruption.

Augnito is transforming speech recognition to meet the evolving needs of clinicians, by understanding the challenges of today, and offering a flexible solution and ROI to support the future of healthcare.

Speech recognition empowers radiologists to work more accurately, efficiently and deliver a higher quality of reporting. But unlocking these considerable performance benefits is only possible when a speech recognition solution is deeply integrated with how radiology departments want to work.

Despite new innovations in technology, many radiologists have been working in a certain way for years, even decades on end. The idea of outsourced transcription, which was deeply embedded, was subsequently replaced by early versions of speech recognition. Even while teleradiology is expected to continue its growth over the next few years, the day-to-day process for many radiologists is reassuringly familiar.

Speech recognition as a mature technology has evolved over the years, it now has the potential to redefine radiology, bringing new levels of accuracy, quality, speed and security. But maximising these performance gains takes a considered approach to integration. The most impactful solution is one that’s deeply integrated, bringing the best possible speech recognition engine to existing PACS/RIS workflows.

Integrating speech with ways of working

The COVID-19 pandemic has driven a rise in new ways of working. In some areas, consultant clinical radiologists have been allowed to continue to work remotely at least part of the working week.

Today, radiology reporting mostly takes place in clinical settings – but also at a wide range of different locations, using different devices. For speech recognition to be adopted, it needs to be easily available everywhere.

Crucially, the right speech recognition solution will deliver a seamless experience on every device, as fully featured as possible to allow radiologists to work without limitations.

Augnito is a cloud-hosted speech recognition platform that’s already supported on multiple devices, including:

  • Desktops and laptops
  • Web browsers on any device
  • iOS and Android smartphones and tablets

As a result, radiologists can get the benefits of integrated speech recognition and word processing, wherever they need it.

Integrating speech with existing systems

A key benefit of speech recognition is reclaiming the time that would’ve been spent on manual or outsourced transcription. However, maximising this time saving is difficult when existing clinical systems slow the reporting process down.

Augnito includes an open API and SDK to integrate speech into any existing clinical system, as well as a Google Chrome plugin to enable speech in web-based software. This extends the time saving potential beyond Augnito itself and into every part of the radiology workflow.

Already, Augnito is being used by radiology specialists in a range of different platforms. The Augnito API makes it possible to embed real-time speech into any platform, creating time savings for radiologists without requiring an entirely new way of working.

Making adoption fast and simple

Many new technologies ask people to invest a lot of time and energy now for savings far into the future. Augnito is different, with a focus on a simple, seamless user experience from day one and savings that can be measured immediately.

Out of the box, Augnito is already built for a wide variety of radiology and clinical terminology. It supports any accent, delivering 99.3% accuracy instantly – with no need for time-consuming voice profile training.

At the same time, Augnito is quick to implement for technical and IT teams. As a cloud-hosted solution, there’s no need to make changes to existing infrastructure. Meanwhile, ongoing updates are seamlessly handled by the Augnito team in the cloud, avoiding the need to change individual user workstations and reporting devices.

The impact of Augnito on radiology performance

Deeply integrated to clinical workflows – and radiologist preferences – Augnito delivers more than accurate speech recognition. It impacts the way radiologists work and report for a measurable increase in wellbeing, standards, and patient outcomes.

Compared to typing, Augnito records patient data five times faster. Augnito also includes advanced options to push this time saving even further.

Macros allow for customisable ‘auto texts’, where standard phrases and blocks of text can be inserted by voice at the cursor, without the need to dictate in full. This reduces the input time for radiologists, so they can focus on the more complex terminology.

Meanwhile, templates enforce a regulated, structured way of reporting, so radiologists can create reports in a standardised format that’s easily shared and understood by colleagues. These reports can also be built around wider approved guidelines and unified standards, creating a further time saving and efficiency increase.

The next generation of speech recognition

With fewer radiologists, more time on site, and increasing backlogs of reports, speech has the power to deliver instant performance increases. But legacy speech recognition, without deep integration, still places a significant burden on radiologists.

As data is moved from one system to another, re-keyed by hand, or copied and pasted into the appropriate field, clinical risk is created. Only an integrated solution can remove the manual handling, preserve accuracy, and empower radiologists to focus on reporting quality, not technology.

Augnito is designed to deliver the next generation of speech recognition – accurate, efficient, secure and integrated. It’s speech recognition at the forefront of AI, built to support the future of radiology.

[London, 26 September 2022] – The developers of Augnito, a secure, cloud-based and AI-driven clinical speech recognition product suite, have recorded rapid growth in their flagship solution’s first year sales results in the UK.

Augnito has recorded first year rapid sales growth in the UK for its secure and portable AI-driven clinical speech recognition (SR) technology, which offers fast, effortless ways to capture live clinical data, on any device, with 99.3% accuracy.
AUGNITO
Augnito was launched in the UK in September 2021 with active sales taking off in the first calendar quarter of 2022, securing in excess of 150 implementations in healthcare environments across England and a number of live pilots with NHS Trusts. The uplift was driven by demand for its solution in the radiology sector, which soared as the health service deals with the backlogs in imaging and reporting created by the pandemic. Now, 12 months since launching, those Augnito pilots have turned into deployments across additional NHS Trusts and over 1000 licence sales across the country being taken up by radiologists and private hospitals through valued strategic technology partners, where Augnito API and SDK is speech-enabling clinical reporting systems and augmenting workflows to assist healthcare institutions to improve patient care across all departments.

Partnerships established this past year include Wellbeing Software, a leading supplier of specialist clinical information solutions, Cimar, a cloud-native health information medical imaging platform, and Hexarad, a UK leading teleradiology service provider.

The developers of Augnito continue to set their sights higher, aiming for sustained sales growth within the next fiscal year, determined to continue to disrupt the clinical SR healthcare market. To help drive that, the business has launched a dedicated UK channel programme looking to sign up value-added resellers and managed service providers that have a healthcare focus and the technical skills necessary to deliver IT solutions for the market.

Shiraz Austin, Co-Founder for Augnito, said: “From the outset, Augnito was built in close partnership with clinicians, using human-centred design, to create a Natural Language Processing engine to fit their needs – not the other way round. As a result, Augnito offers excellent support for a wide variety of clinical vocabulary, covering more than 30 medical specialities, and workflows and this is what has driven market interest in, and sales of, our voice-AI solution.”

“We are extremely pleased with our performance. It’s really a strong validation of our vision and product capabilities; customers are increasingly looking to alternative voice-AI driven solutions such as ours which address a number of core issues that confront those on the healthcare frontline, such as improving efficiency and accuracy, as well as optimising clinical workflows,” added Austin.

Augnito is a secure and portable AI-driven clinical SR product suite that offers fast, effortless ways to capture live clinical data, on any device. The SaaS cloud-based solution is proven to create highly accurate clinical records, improving the timing on everything from patient diagnosis to patient hospital stays in delayed transfers of care. Radiology departments have been the early adopters and pioneers of speech recognition technology to accommodate the ever-increasing levels of a wide variety of diagnostic reporting and the ever-expanding modality spectrum. Augnito now offers radiologists an improved, more efficient way to deliver their service using the benefits that voice-driven AI technology provides. In addition, and following the success of it’s first year of business in the UK, Augnito is extending its solutions offering to other medical and surgical departments across the national healthcare sector.

All Augnito products remove the need for healthcare IT teams to support the solution with additional hardware and/or software. Product application enhancements are delivered in the cloud as soon as they are ready for release, without the need to upgrade locally installed versions. This reduces dependency on IT resource teams, potential associated product downtime, delays, and costs.

[London, 7 September 2022] – Shiraz Austin, Augnito Co-Founder and expert in AI-driven speech recognition addresses the current challenges and risks associated in radiology reporting.

Radiologists are facing increased pressure to manage NHS resource shortages. With unprecedented backlogs, delays in training newly qualified consultants and demand increasing with every passing day, Trusts and healthcare providers need new ways to reduce discrepancies in diagnostics and radiology reporting errors to ultimately drive the cost of risk down.

Shiraz Austin, Co-Founder of Augnito, stated: “There is a financial cost and a very real human cost to risk and errors in radiology. Issues with radiology reporting – often due to workloads, reporting accuracy, or radiologist cognitive overload expose Trusts to litigation, expose radiologists to burnout and withdrawal from the profession at a time when they are most needed, and expose patients to inferior care/health standards, or worst still, life limiting outcomes.”

According to NHS statistics ¹, 12,629 clinical claims were made against the NHS in 2020/21 at a cost of around £2 billion. Perhaps more alarming is that this number of claims was 133% higher than nine years ago demonstrating a significant increase year on year.

Austin continued: “These numbers are unacceptable, the human cost is unacceptable. While radiologists are addressing diagnostic risks by taking proactive steps to reduce errors at every stage, ensuring reporting accuracy, backlogs, and checking accuracy standards in the solutions they use, remain vital components of their service, there are digital solutions that can help support them and radiology as a whole. Solutions using speech recognition (SR) technology can ease the workload backlog and mitigate risks.”

“Advances in today’s SR solutions help to streamline workflow, improve transparency and promote clinician efficiency. Augnito’s voice-AI-driven technology is highly accurate straight out of the box and works with radiologists however and wherever they need to work. It assists radiologists to report faster without errors, whilst embracing reporting standards through consistently structured formats and a natural learning processing engine with natural language understanding.

The cost of errors and delays to the NHS – through litigation, or in time lost as each day passes without accurate solutions being implemented – and in patient care, placing a risk to life, cannot continue in the current upward trend. In its first year of launching, Augnito’s technology is already deployed across a large percentage of the UK’s radiology reporting and teleradiology platforms  ̶  accurately supporting radiologists every day in their key patient-care role. Our mission to democratize speech recognition across the whole continuum of care has only just started” concluded Austin.
